Peter Syndicas
Peter Syndicas is sculptor living and working in South Australia. In 1997, his figurative twig journey began. The artist said, ‘I search specifically for twigs that portray a human figure as it gives each sculpture of mine a unique duality. On the one hand they are magnified reproductions of fragile twigs, while at the same time they display these very expressive abstract human forms… I love that my sculptures allow people to see fragments of plant life as works of art’.
In 2017, Syndicas came across an unusual stone on a friend’s property in the Flinders Ranges. It carved as beautifully and as easily as marble. However when polished, it revealed an intricate and extraordinary patterning. It was identified by the South Australian Museum as a fossil known as a Stromatolite. Stromatolites are the earliest fossil evidence of life on Earth. These forms are now the basis of Syndicas’ more recent body of work: exquisitely carved fossils dating back to a period in time, some 750 million years ago.
